OWFI's Work On the Ground
OWFI is committed first and foremost to saving lives--the most obvious and vital action to be taken at such a time of deep crisis for Iraq. We then find that it is within the shelter that the basic health and dignity of women survivors can be restored. We also provide medical services, psycho-social support, literacy classes, feminist education, and skill building training in income generation and financial independence to help women recover and reintegrate into a community or family. Beyond this immediate protection work, OWFI has become a central voice speaking to the issues of women amongst civil society organizing in Iraq. We work towards shifting social norms, practices, policies and laws through our many projects: the Feminist School, the Network of Anti-Trafficking of Women in Iraq, Al Mousawat radio and newspaper, and countless ongoing campaigns, actions, protests, seminars, meetings and more. |
